Here is my final live post for a few days. I won’t lie to you and say I’ll be sneaking into internet cafe’s to post everyday from Europe. Who would?

Instead I’ve left you with a good week of pre made posts whilst I’m tearing up Europe with the Quarter Tones.

AND if that wasn’t enough. Despite having two long and full days of busking the streets of London we have recorded a one-off podcast all about ourselves and our up and coming adventure. Generous hey??
I hope you enjoy the podcast and have all the usual fun on the lead up to christmas.

15 gigs, a broken down car, 25 hours of driving and a very tired musician later and I’m finally in London. I’ve spent today unpacking and strolling round my new city (and drafting a letter to the other flats in my block warning them of my social practicing hours).

I’ve covered a fair few miles of walking today and have a feeling that it’ll be keeping me fit. As for tomorrow I’m going to see Jonny and work on our Duo project. I’ll be seeing Rob Turner (from the Quarter Tones) in the evening. He’ll be having the first screening of the near completed documentary. I’m sure he’ll love it. At least until I give it him on DVD and tell hime to make notes on it for me.

I’m sure that I’ll end up loving or hating London. I don’t think you can be ambivalent towards the city. Lets hope for a good time though!

Neil Yates played at LIPA yesterday with his group New Origins.

New Origins is made up of Neil Yates (trumpet/ flugelhorn/low whistles and vocal) Stuart McCallum (guitar), Les Chisnall (piano), Gavin Barras (double bass) Rob Turner (drums/ percussion and vocal) Martin O’Neill (bodhran).

Let me start by saying what a refreshing change this group was. A tight, sensative and unobtrusive rhythm section held the group through thoroughly interesting and enjoyable original charts. The mix of the standard jazz format injected with folk influences gave this group its refreshing sound.

Neil’s style of playing and improvising was cleverly mixed with live sound sampling making it possible for him to play over himself with great effect. This was perhaps only matched by Martin O’Neil on Bodhran who demonstrated the full depths of this instrument at the end of their performance.

For those who don’t know what a Bodhran is you should look it up on the internet and then look into seeing New Origins live to get a grasp of how this unusual instrument is played by a pro.

The set that Neil Yates’ New Origin created for this taster event was very enjoyable and I recommend seeing them live to get a feel for what these guys are about. Talented, relaxed, interesting and thoroughly enjoyable.

So much so I bought their album. (Album Review to follow)
