First of all, wow! 5 musicians! Secondly grade 8 at 10! Awesome and finally, a beautiful improviser too. That's amazing. you must be very proud.

I haven't seen a Schilke in years but some of my friends had them growing up and I always thought they made a nice sound. I need to go into a a decent music shop (if I can find one!) and play through their stock again soon. It's been a while.

Thanks for your comment, but I lost the flow of your story at the end. You where told to "get a life" by an adjudicator? That's nice hey? What where your opinions that got that response.

Hello Matt,
I am a fathere of five musicians and was trined at the Guildhall myself (and Phil Wilby at Leeds in composition), and they have played trumpet frnech horn, trumpet and flugel, cello flute violin, and Tuba.
We wbought the best instruments we could afford and in Edwards case who is my demon 10 year old trumpeter (grade 8 this summer, not that he cares as he is lovely impoviser and makes a great sound which are the main things). He is the proud owner of a Schilke trumpet (true intonation and quailty of build) and Getzen custom Fluegel which he loves for its free-blowing (direct air through the trumpet without 'bends'). I once offered some views on the treament of youn player sat festival by adjudicators and was told by the organiser to 'get a life'. I though I had one, and wonder at Mr taylors sensitivity: silly man
All the best

Thanks Milo,

In my opinion a well balanced and spot on view to take. I hope you find the horn that can help you discover the sound that you're after.

Love this thread, in a few more post Godwins law will be complete.

I'm off to replace my 28 year old Yamaha 6340, honestly, I don't care what it looks like, I only care what it sounds like. If an extra fin here and there gives you "that sound" you desire then go right ahead.

Someone was mentioning intonation on Taylors, this is usually down to the player not understanding the horn. It takes months to understand intonation in a new horn. No horn is perfect, however if the player uses his/her ears, and some time, you can get pretty close.

So I will probably try a Taylor, also a Stomvi, Yamaha xeno etc and if the horn makes a the "sound" I want. I'll get it.

Hopefully it won't be a replica of the Starship Enterprise.
