My Phone’s Coming Home

I have had a mobile phone for nearly half of my life now and I’ve been through a fair few.

As of a couple of years ago I started getting quite nice phones since I’ve been using it more and more. However over a year I’ve managed to get the worst and best phones I’ve ever had.

When it first came out I got the Motorola V3x.

Good Stuff:

Slim with a satisfying flip open.
2 Mega Pixel Camera, Internet Access (I don’t use this)
Nice screen
Light but not flimsy

Bad Stuff:

Thanks to software problem it would crash and not let you make calls.
(In more detail when you try to access your contacts to call of text it boots you back to the home screen for certain contacts.)
There are many problems (such as the short battery life and the rubbish navigation screen) but this with this phone but this is the most annoying.

As I spent many hours on the phone to Orange because they didn’t have any long term solutions to this problem and although I paid insurance they wouldn’t replace my phone). Short of smashing it I have a few solutions for those who still have this phone:

1) To SORT ANY SOFTWARE ISSUES like the above turn your phone on as normal, take off the back and pull the phone battery out. Leave it out for about 30 minutes and this will make the phone do a “Hard Reset”. This will resets the software and will sort your problems for a few days - until it will happen again!!

2) If you want your PHONE REPLACED and you’re having problems like me. I.e. Orange say we supply the network, your issue’s with Motorola.” I got some simple advice from someone in an orange shop after all the calls I’d made”

I explained my problem (which is common to nearly all motoral V3x and I therfore assume their entire series if they allow a faulty product like this out onto the market) and he told me (with a wink) that I should call them again and complain about my “sticking 9 key”.
I thought this was stupid so I went “okay thanks (for nothing)” and later after my phone crashed again and I managed to lose a gig over it!!! I called Orange again.
I spent 20 minutes telling orange all the problems this phone had and was getting nowhere. I nearly hung up when I thought about the “sticky 9 key” so I gave it a try and said: “and another thing is I have an intermittent problem with my 9 key and sometimes i just can’t dial 9 when I’m putting in numbers”.

This is a powerful gift!!!

Straight away I was told they’d send a replacement phone the next day!! I assume that in the case of an emergency you might need the 9 key to dial 999 and if you can’t you would no doubt blame Orange.

So there we have it: “Hard Resets” and “Sticky 9’s” are the way to get your Motorola V3x to work. (I’d like to point out that my replacement V3x was just as bad.)

However should you want a safe and reliable phone I suggest a SAMSUNG SGH-D840 (looks better in silver):

I got this phone by chance as I was tempted by the look of the LG Shine KE970.

It looks great with the exception of the crap bar that you navigate through a terrible navigation screen. Then I saw the SAMSUNG (by chance it was one of the first 3 to come into Birmingham as samples).

I bought it and it has been brilliant, reliable, robust, easy to use and navigate. Does everything it says on the box constantly.

The only problem I’ve had came 2 days ago when the screen started to crash (everything worked but you couldn’t see) and you needed to turn it off and on again for it to work but orange replaced it this morning - whilst I was writing this blog. So I can’t complain at the service.

Despite this one off problem the phone is still a 10/10 phone for me. If you have one I’m sure you’ll agree and I’d say that the only trusted phone brands I’ve come across are NOKIA and SAMSUNG.
